BOONE – Betty Long and William “Bill” McGalliard
have received the W.W. Rankin Memorial Award for Excellence in
Mathematics Education and Service from the N.C. Council of Teachers
of Mathematics. It’s the highest award presented by the organization. Long and McGallaird are professors in Appalachian State University’s
Department of Mathematics where they teach math education.
The Rankin Award recognizes service to the NCCTM as well as mathematics
education.
Long received her award from Bob Jones, a former member of the
N.C. Department of Public Instruction. “Long has taught math
at the secondary and college level and has been a major player
in preparing young people to teach mathematics. She has taken on
numerous leadership tasks in NCCTM, and carried them out in exemplary
fashion,” he said.
Long is president of the NCCTM Western Region and has organized
NCCTM math fairs.
“
For more than 30 years, she has given of her time and talent in
an unselfish manner to the quest for excellence in mathematics
education,” Jones said.
McGallaird’s award was presented by retired Guilford County
Schools administrator Jeanette Gann, who said, “As a college
mathematics professor, he not only taught prospective teachers,
but went into classrooms and taught with teachers.”
Quoting one of McGallaird’s colleagues, she said, “He
has a knack of making folks of all ages comfortable with mathematics.”
McGallaird’s 40-year career spans teaching at the secondary
level as well as in the college classroom. He designed and taught
special topics courses at Appalachian and the university’s
Mathematics and Science Education Center. He developed and delivered
mathematics staff development services for several school systems,
and led Family Mathematics workshops for teachers, students and
parents.
