BOONE – NASCAR’s 1960 champion, Rex White, and his biographer, Anne B. Jones, will speak at Appalachian State University on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The event, sponsored by the Appalachian State University Libraries, is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Suzanne Wise in Belk Library at (828) 262-2798.

White won more races than any other driver between 1959 and 1963, exhibiting the skill and consistency that led one writer to say, “If Richard Petty is the Babe Ruth of stock car racing, then Rex White is the Joe DiMaggio.” White was named by NASCAR as one of their 50 all-time greatest drivers.

White will talk about his career in the early days of NASCAR and southern stock car racing. He and Jones will discuss their collaboration to produce his autobiography, “Gold Thunder: Autobiography of a NASCAR Champion,” recently published by McFarland & Company.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.

The Appalachian State University Libraries is home to the Stock Car Racing Collection, a collection of more than 500 books, magazines, and videos. The collection also contains files of clippings, photographs, race programs, driver cards, and other material which may be viewed by appointment. The collection is open to the public.
