BOONE—Joseph J. Gonzalez’s education didn’t end when he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. The assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies said he knew very little about freshmen until he was given the opportunity to teach, engage and nurture first-year students at Appalachian State University. BOONE—Appalachian State University will be putting out an extra-large welcome mat for members of the freshman class of 2015 who are expected to begin moving into residence halls on Friday, Aug. 19, beginning at 9 a.m. The university expects between 2,941 to 2,965 freshmen to begin their college careers later this month, according to university officials. – Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents its annual Freshman Showcase Oct. 13-16 in the I.G. Greer Studio Theatre on Appalachian’s campus. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 13-15, and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. [more]

BOONE—Hillary Jordan, author of the book “Mudbound,” will speak at Appalachian State University’s convocation Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. in the Holmes Convocation Center. “Mudbound” was the 2010 selection for the university’s Summer Reading Program.
A panel discussion about the book will begin at 2 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom. [more]
