New department chairs named in Appalachian’s College of Arts and Sciences

BOONE, N.C.—Three faculty at Appalachian State University have been named chairs of their respective departments.

Middle and high school students compete in regional math competition hosted by Appalachian

BOONE, N.C.—Awards for individuals and top schools were earned during regional qualifying for the NCCTM State Mathematics Contest held at Appalachian State University March 8. A total of 306 area students took part in the competitions, which included Level 1, equivalent to Algebra 1 course study, and Comprehensive, equivalent to the top high school math level. Winners qualified to compete at the state level competition.

BOONE, N.C.—Awards for individuals and top schools will be earned during qualifying competitions for the NCCTM State Mathematics Contest to be held in Plemmons Student Union at Appalachian State University Wednesday, March 8.

NSF grant will fund computer science and math scholarships at Appalachian

BOONE—The National Science Foundation has awarded a $620,000 four-year grant to Appalachian State University to support the High Achievers Scholarship Program in computer science and mathematics.

Area students compete in regional math competition

BOONE—Providence Day School in Charlotte won first place and Grandview Middle School in Hickory won second place in the regional N.C. State High School Mathematics Contest held at Appalachian State University on Wednesday, March 20. The schools won in the algebra 1 and common core math 1 portion of the contest.

Faculty emerita/emeritus status granted by the Board of Trustees

BOONE—Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees granted emerita or emeritus status during its March 22 meeting to 14 members of the faculty.

Crocker receives Rankin Memorial Award for Excellence in Mathematics Education

BOONE—Dr. Deborah A. Crocker of Appalachian State University has received the W. W. Rankin Memorial Award for Excellence in Mathematics Education. The award was presented by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) at its 42nd Annual State Mathematics Conference held in Greensboro Oct. 25-26. The Rankin Award is the highest honor that NCCTM can bestow upon an individual.
