Golf tournament honors Appalachian alumnus

BOONE—Golf for fun and a good cause Monday, Oct. 7, during the 14th Annual Stephen’s Tournament at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh, a course designed by 1992 US Open Champion Tom Kite. The tournament begins at 11:30 a.m.

Power of Design to feature Tim Duggan of the Make It Right Foundation

BOONE—The 7th Power of Design symposium featuring Tim Duggan of the Make It Right Foundation will be held Tuesday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Appalachian State University. The event will be held in Plemmons Student Union’s Price Lake Room. Duggan’s talk is titled “Disaster to Opportunity.” The public is invited.

BOONE—Dr. J. Rosie Tighe, a geography and planning professor at Appalachian State University, has received a $10,000 grant from Oak Ridge Associated Universities for a project examining Asheville’s current major redevelopment plans in contrast to urban renewal programs in the past.

Professors chart tropical cyclones’ role in ending drought in the Southeast

BOONE—Hurricanes and tropical storms can wreak havoc when they make landfall, often resulting in fatalities and causing billions of dollars in property damages. But they also can have a silver lining, particularly when they are “drought busters,” as was the case for Tropical Storm Debby, which dropped more than 20 inches of rain in some parts of Florida and Georgia in late June.
