Appalachian economics students place first in regional and district College Fed Challenge, earn honorable mention in finals

BOONE, N.C.—Economics students from the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University received an honorable mention, as did Princeton University and University of Chicago, for their work in the 13th annual national College Fed Challenge. The Federal Reserve System Board of Governors announced the awards Dec. 1. The team placed first in their Regional and District competitions before moving on to the finals in Washington, D.C.

Walker College of Business faculty awarded professorships

BOONE—Walker College of Business faculty Pete Groothuis, William M. Baker, Chris McNeil, Pia Albinsson, Dana Clark, Dave McEvoy and Joseph Cazier have been awarded professorships at Appalachian State University.

Economics professor awarded grant for socioeconomic study of Atlantic menhaden

BOONE—Dr. John Whitehead, professor and chair of Appalachian State University’s Department of Economics, has been awarded $95,303 by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) to conduct a socioeconomic study of Atlantic menhaden commercial fisheries.

11th Annual Appalachian Spring Conference in World History and Economics features Dr. James Robinson April 16

BOONE – Dr. James Robinson, leading specialist in development economics and economic history at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, will be the keynote speaker at the 11th Annual Appalachian Spring Conference in World History and Economics: Institutions and Development, to be held at Appalachian State University April 15-17.

Cherry named to Journal of Environmental Economics and Management editorial board

BOONE—Todd L. Cherry, a professor in Appalachian State University’s Department of Economics, has been named to the editorial board of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management (JEEM).

Walker College of Business team wins N.C. CFA Institute Research Challenge

BOONE—Four students from Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business won the N.C. CFA Institute Research Challenge held in Greensboro, besting student teams from Elon University, N.C. State University and UNC Wilmington.

The award recognizes excellence in teaching, service, research and contributions by a non-tenure track faculty member and a staff member.

BOONE—Dr. Ralph Alan Cohen, noted Shakespeare scholar and co-founder of the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Va., will discuss “The Role of the Arts in Building Community Economies” at Appalachian State University Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
