Appalachian State University to open new Student Veteran Resource Center

BOONE—A new Student Veteran Resource Center, slated to open later this year on the campus of Appalachian State University, will serve the needs of Appalachian students who are active duty military personnel and veterans.

Appalachian State University’s Global Film Series presents ‘Journey to the West’ Sept. 21

BOONE—The Global Film Series, a cooperative campus effort to provide a blend of cinema from around the world, will present the Chinese film “Journey to the West” directed by Stephen Chow, on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in Appalachian State University’s I.G. Greer Auditorium. Admission to the film is free, and the public is welcome.

Reck receives AAUP Chapter’s Academic Freedom Award

BOONE—Dr. Gregory G. Reck, a professor in the Department of Anthropology at Appalachian State University, has received the 2016 Award for Academic Freedom and Faculty Governance from the university’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

Renowned poet and veteran to host Sept. 28 writing workshop for veterans and families

BOONE—Dr. Bruce Weigl, renowned poet and Vietnam veteran, Bronze Star winner and finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in poetry, will lead a workshop titled “Writing Trauma: A Workshop for Veterans and Their Families” Wednesday, Sept. 28, in Room 420 (Parkway Ballroom) of Appalachian State University’s Plemmons Student Union (PSU) from 4 – 7 p.m.

Theatre and Dance presents the 2016 ‘First Year Showcase’

BOONE—The Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance will present the 2016 “First Year Showcase” at 7 p.m. Sept. 22–24 with a 2 p.m. matinee Sept. 25. The production takes place in the university’s I.G. Greer Studio Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults.

Clarinetist Douglas Miller’s recital held Sept. 20 at Rosen Concert Hall

BOONE—Douglas Miller (clarinet) will hold a recital at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Bair Shagdaron will accompany Miller on piano. Both are faculty in the Hayes School of Music.
