Appalachian to help people of Nepal

BOONE—Offices and programs at Appalachian State University are partnering with the local non-profit agency Wine to Water to help provide clean water and additional emergency supplies to earthquake victims in Nepal.

Gibbard and Hester recognized for excellence in student advising and mentoring

BOONE—Two individuals who exemplify outstanding student advising at Appalachian State University are Bob Gibbard and Dr. Brooke Hester, co-winners of University College’s Excellence in Student Advising and Mentoring Award for 2015. The award is presented to a faculty or staff member for their superior performance in promoting and fostering student learning, development and self-authorship through their advising and mentoring activities.

Team from Appalachian wins Spencer RIMS Risk Management Challenge

BOONE—Risk management and insurance (RMI) majors from Appalachian State University have won the national Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge. The final presentation rounds were held in conjunction with the RIMS 2015 Annual Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana, April 26-28.

West receives Excellence in Community Engagement Award

BOONE—Dr. Stephanie West has received the Excellence in Community Engagement Award from University College at Appalachian State University. The award recognizes a faculty or staff member who participates actively in the local community and encourages students to engage with local communities and organizations as well.

Applications open for the Alpha Gamma Scholarship at Appalachian

BOONE—The Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will award two scholarships to students majoring in teacher education. One scholarship will be awarded to a student at Appalachian State University and one will be awarded to a student at Lees-McRae College.

Bennett wins Capote Literary Trust Scholarship

Andrew D. Bennett of Cary has won the Truman Capote Literary Trust Scholarship for Creative Writing (prose) for 2015-16. Bennett is a junior at Appalachian State University majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing. His first place award is $3,420.

Hudnall and Keeter honored for excellence in teaching in Appalachian’s general education program

BOONE—Amy Hudnall and Rebecca Keeter have been honored for their exemplary teaching in Appalachian State University’s general education program.

Conway and Pope honored by Appalachian’s University College

BOONE—Two lecturers in the Department of English at Appalachian State University have been honored by University College and its general education program for their teaching and work with undergraduate students.

Works by Italian composers performed May 1 by the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra

BOONE—Selections composed by Italian opera great Verdi will be performed May 1 by the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra. The program begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
