PERFORMANCE CANCELED: Chicago-based Axiom Brass performs Feb. 18 at Appalachian

BOONE—The Feb. 18 performance by the Axiom Brass, a Chicago-based brass quintet, has been canceled.


Lewis Nash and Appalachian Jazz Ensemble performance rescheduled

BOONE—The Feb. 20 performance by jazz drummer Lewis Nash and the Appalachian Jazz Ensemble has been rescheduled. The musicians will perform April 18 in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at Appalachian State University. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Technology for Teaching Fair: Enhancing Student Engagement and Learning

BOONE—A technology for teaching fair focused on enhancing student engagement and learning will be held March 20 in Belk Library and Information Commons’ lower level from noon to 4 p.m.

Hayes School of Music receives re-accreditation

BOONE—The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University has received a renewal of membership and accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music.

The accreditation comes after a 10-year process of creating and completing a self-assessment and a visit from the association’s Commission on Accreditation.

Townley to compete in the National Trumpet Competition

BOONE—When Mitchell Townley was in fourth grade in Woodbine, Maryland, he decided to play trumpet in the elementary school’s band after his best friend also selected trumpet. While his classmate moved on to other pursuits, Townley stuck with his choice of instrument and continued to play throughout middle school after his family moved to Raleigh and at Wakefield High School, where he play in the marching band.

Concerto-aria competition winners perform Feb. 15

BOONE—Winners of the Hayes School of Music’s concerto-aria competition will perform with the Appalachian State University Symphony Orchestra Sunday, Feb. 15.

The event allowed students, staff, faculty and others to chat with members of University Police in an informal setting and enjoy a free cup of coffee.

Hayes School of Music string faculty performance rescheduled for Feb. 21

BOONE—The Feb. 19 performance by the Hayes School of Music string faculty and clarinetist Andrea Cheeseman has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free and the public is invited.

CHAMP screenings to improve balance to begin March 5

BOONE—To help older adults learn how to prevent falls, Appalachian State University’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Institute for Health and Human Services will begin offering free monthly CHAMP screenings at two locations in Watauga County beginning in March.
