CoCoRaHS founder Nolan Doesken to speak June 5 at Appalachian

BOONE—Nolan Doesken, founder of CoCoRaHS, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, will speak Thursday, June 5, at Appalachian State University. Doesken’s 6 p.m presentation will be held in Room 114, Belk Library Information Commons on campus.

Doesken is the state climatologist for Colorado at the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University. He will discuss the history of CoCoRaHS, present precipitation statistics from the Southern Appalachian region, share goals for the future, and facilitate a discussion on these and related topics.

Members of the CoCoRaHS network and others interested in the weather are invited to bring their stories and questions to the presentation. Door prizes will be awarded.

Public parking is available after 5:30 p.m. in the College Street Parking Deck, which is adjacent to the Belk Library and Information Commons. A campus map is available (PDF 3.75M).

CoCoRaHS is a grassroots volunteer network of backyard weather observers of all ages who measure precipitation (rain, hail and snow) in their local communities. Volunteers provide daily precipitation observations in all 50 states and in many Canadian Provinces. The network’s goal is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications. More information about the network is available at http://www.cocorahs.org.

Doesken also will be the banquet speaker for the 71st Eastern Snow Conference being held June 3-5 at Appalachian. The event is open to the public, but attendees must register online or on-site. Registration ranges from $100 for students and one-day participants to $200 to attend the entire conference.

Registration fees include a buffet breakfast, lunches and refreshment breaks, and the banquet for those registering for the June 4 event. The early registration deadline is May 23.
