Appalachian’s theatre and dance department hosts Momentum Dance Showcase

BOONE—The Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance will present the 2014 Momentum Dance Showcase Jan. 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Varsity Gym Dance Studio on campus.

Hutchins co-winner of Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation

BOONE—For the first time in the history of the Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation, two translators share the £3,000 prize for 2013: American translator William Maynard Hutchins, who is a professor of religious studies at Appalachian State University, and British translator Jonathan Wright.

Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh names Bathanti inaugural scholar-in-residence

BOONE—N.C. Poet Laureate and Appalachian State University creative writing professor Joseph Bathanti has been named the first scholar-in-residence at the Senator John Heinz History Center. The center is located in Pittsburgh.

Earn $300 as a research volunteer at Appalachian

BOONE—Women between the ages of 18 and 50 are being recruited for a research study at Appalachian State University. Individuals selected for the study will receive $300 for adhering to all aspects of the study design.

Quintessential performance presented Jan. 28

BOONE—The five-member ensemble Quintessential from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will perform Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Hayes String Ensemble performs Jan. 22

Harmonia Baroque performs Jan. 21

BOONE—The Hayes School of Music’s Faculty Performance Series opens spring semester with a Jan. 21 program by Harmonia Baroque, a faculty ensemble that specializes in music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Schlenker named managing director of Appalachian’s Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship

BOONE—Erich Schlenker has been named managing director of the Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University.
