Graduate students compete in 3-Minute Research competition

BOONE—Graduate student Alex Kirk can tell you about his research on adolescent suicide in three minutes flat. He did just that at the Fall 3-Minute Research competition on Dec. 3 at Appalachian State University sponsored by the Cratis D. Williams Graduate School. And he got the judges’ attention.

Butts’ 40-year academic career celebrated

Dr. Jeff Butts’ 40-year career in higher education was celebrated by colleagues from the Department of Biology and friends from across the university during an on-campus reception Dec. 6. Butts retired from his position as a professor in the biology department at the end of fall semester.

Appalachian reaccredited by SACSCOC

BOONE—Appalachian State University has received reaffirmation of accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), according to information released today by the commission. The reaccreditation is for a 10-year period.

Illusory Permanence: The Persistence of Nature on display at Looking Glass Gallery

BOONE—“Illusory Permanence: the Persistence of Nature,” an exhibition by Bachelor of Fine Arts candidate Katherine Meeks, will be on display through Dec. 13 in Looking Glass Gallery located in Appalachian State University’s Plemmons Student Union. A reception will be held in the gallery from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13.

Clinical trial results support ‘cocktail’ approach to joint pain relief

BOONE—A recent study conducted at the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis studied the effectiveness of the joint pain supplement Instaflex™ Joint Support. An eight-week clinical trial showed the supplement significantly reduced joint pain and stiffness in test volunteers after four weeks of use.

McCorkindale elected to Institute for Public Relations board

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The Institute for Public Relations (IPR) has elected Tina McCorkindale, an associate professor at Appalachian State University, to a three-year term on its board of trustees beginning January 2014. McCorkindale, a member of the Department of Communication faculty, is one of six new members on the board.

Matthews to deliver commencement address Dec. 14 at Appalachian

BOONE—Dr. Anne L. Matthews, vice president of Rotary International, will be the guest speaker for December graduation at Appalachian State University.

Appalachian students participate in the 9th Annual State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium

BOONE—Forty-eight undergraduate students from Appalachian State University presented their work at the 9th Annual State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium held at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte campus on Nov. 16.

20th annual holiday scholarship concert held Dec. 6

BOONE—The Hayes School of Music’s 20th annual Holiday Scholarship Concert will be Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at Appalachian State University. Admission is $10. Tickets are available at the Schaefer Center Box Office weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or may be purchased online at Ticket sales support scholarships for students in the Hayes School of Music.
