Appalachian students participate in the 9th Annual State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium

BOONE—Forty-eight undergraduate students from Appalachian State University presented their work at the 9th Annual State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium held at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte campus on Nov. 16.

20th annual holiday scholarship concert held Dec. 6

BOONE—The Hayes School of Music’s 20th annual Holiday Scholarship Concert will be Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at Appalachian State University. Admission is $10. Tickets are available at the Schaefer Center Box Office weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or may be purchased online at http://theschaefercenter.org. Ticket sales support scholarships for students in the Hayes School of Music.

Global Leadership Award presented to Koehn, Meister and Burns

BOONE—Three individuals from Appalachian State University have been recognized for their work to advance global learning. Receiving the 2013 Global Leadership Award are Jenny Koehn, Scott Meister and Madalyn Burns. The awards were presented Nov. 20 during a ceremony on campus.

Campus emergency siren test conducted Dec. 4

BOONE—Appalachian State University will conduct a test of its campus siren warning system Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 11:55 a.m. Examples of the tones that are used in an emergency or during tests can be heard online at http://em.emergency.appstate.edu/siren-warning-system.

Gospel Choir performs Dec. 3

BOONE—Keith McCutchen directs the Hayes School of Music’s Appalachian Gospel Choir in a Dec. 3 performance at Appalachian State University. The program begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Senior Studio Exhibition presented Dec. 2-13

BOONE—Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University will present the Friggatriskaidekaphobia: BFA Senior Studio Exhibition Fall 2013 Dec. 2-13. The exhibition includes work by candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art.

Chestnut trees planted on campus as part of restoration efforts

BOONE—Eight chestnut seedlings have been planted in Appalachian State University’s Durham Park in a demonstration planting that is part of a new partnership between Appalachian and The American Chestnut Foundation. For the past 30 years, TACF has been breeding potentially blight-resistant American chestnut seedlings as part of its efforts to restore the American chestnut to the eastern forests.

John Dee Holeman performs Nov. 21 at Appalachian

BOONE—Blues musician John Dee Holeman will perform Nov. 21 at Appalachian State University in Plemmons Student Union’s Beacon Heights Room. His performances will begin at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. In addition, Holman will perform at 5 p.m. in Belk Library and Information Commons Room 421.

Wind ensemble performance Dec. 2 at Appalachian

BOONE—Join the Appalachian Wind Ensemble Dec. 2 for an 8 p.m. performance in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free and the public is invited.
