Campus emergency siren test conducted Nov. 6

BOONE—Appalachian State University will conduct a test of its campus siren warning system Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11:55 a.m.

Appalachian senior recognized as “civic trailblazer”

ELON—Appalachian State University senior Amanda Moore is the recipient of the 2013 John H. Barnhill Civic Trailblazer Award. Given annually by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide association of colleges and universities committed to community engagement, the Barnhill Award recognizes one college senior in the state who has created and led innovative projects that address community needs.

Pioneer of the local food movement speaks Oct. 31 at Appalachian

BOONE—Gary Paul Nabhan, internationally celebrated conservation scientist, writer, food and farming activist, and proponent of conserving the links between biodiversity and cultural diversity, will speak at Appalachian State University Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m. in the McRae Peak Ballroom in Plemmons Student Union.

Film “Bathanti” to be shown Nov. 25

BOONE—The Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series will screen the film “Bathanti,” a documentary about N.C. Poet Laureate Joseph Bathanti, on Monday, Nov. 25, at Appalachian State University.

Ogburn named SILS distinguished alumna

BOONE—Joyce L. Ogburn, dean of libraries and Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor at Appalachian State University, will receive the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science (SILS) Distinguished Alumna Award for 2013 at the school’s fall commencement ceremony Dec. 15, where she also will deliver the commencement address.

Jazz ensemble performs Oct. 29 at Appalachian

BOONE—The 17-member Jazz Ensemble II from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will present a program Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
