Dance Around the World is a multicultural dance featuring groups from Appalachian’s campus and the Boone community. Each group will perform and teach a dance that represents their culture. The dance will be held in Plemmons Student Union’s Parkway Ballroom. The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to give a suggested donation of $6.

This event is organized by students in the Department of Communication’s Principles of Fundraising class to raise money for an international non-profit organization, Tumul K’in Center of Learning. Tumul K’in is based in Toledo, Belize. Its mission is to promote sustainable development through intercultural education while preserving Mayan culture and traditions. Proceeds from Dance Around the World will be used to purchase T-shirts for Tumul K’in’s Maya Day celebration, scheduled for Spring 2014.

“This is a neat opportunity to learn about different cultures through an unusual medium,” senior public relations major Laura Walton said. “It’s also an easy way to support a great organization while having a ton of fun.”
