Campus emergency siren test conducted May 1

BOONE—Appalachian State University will conduct a test of its campus siren warning system Wednesday, May 1, at 11:55 a.m.

BFA senior studio exhibition runs through June 1

BOONE—The BFA Senior Studio Exhibition: Spring 2013 runs May through June 1 at Appalachian State University. The exhibitions on view in galleries on campus and around Boone include work by 17 candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art.

Three students receive outstanding leadership award

BOONE—Seniors Nakisa Asefnia of Raleigh, Lauren Brigman of Marshall and Laura Levine of Raleigh have received the Ronny L. Brooks Leadership Award, which recognizes students who have distinguished themselves through the leadership that they provide to Appalachian State University students, programs, and/or organizations.

Closing reception for campus art exhibit held May 3

BOONE—A closing reception for Photo Paintings, a photography exhibition by artist and curator Ben Wesemann will be held May 3 from 6:45 – 8 p.m. in the Gilley Recording Studio located on the fourth floor of Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music. The event is free and open to the public.

Gerber honored for outstanding teaching of first year students

BOONE—This year’s recipient of the Rennie W. Brantz Award for Outstanding Teaching in First Year Seminar has taught at Appalachian State University for 38 years.

Appalachian named one of Princeton Review’s 322 Green Colleges

BOONE—Appalachian State University is one of 322 colleges and universities across the nation included in “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 322 Green Colleges” for 2013. The guide was created in collaboration with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) (http://www.usgbc.org).

Ayotte receives Bobby L. Dunnigan Award for Outstanding Service

BOONE—Emily Elizabeth Ayotte has received the Bobby L. Dunnigan Award for Outstanding Service for 2013. This award recognizes students who are employed in the Division of Student Development at Appalachian State University and have distinguished themselves through the scope and quality of their service during their employment. Dunnigan was director of residence life when he retired.

Student poster abstracts sought for 2013 Appalachian Energy Summit

BOONE—Students at Appalachian State University are invited to submit poster abstracts for possible inclusion in the 2013 Appalachian Energy Summit.

Jazz vocal concert held May 1

BOONE—Jerome Kern, John Coltrane and George Gershwin help fill the program for the May 1 performance of the Appalachian Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Keith McCutchen directs the ensemble in the 8 p.m. performance in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. The public is invited.
