BB&T CEO Kelly King to deliver Boyles Lecture

BOONE—Kelly S. King, chairman and chief executive officer of BB&T Corporation, will be the speaker at this spring’s Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture at Appalachian State University. King’s speech is titled “Economic Realities – Post Election.”

The event, sponsored by the Walker College of Business, is on Wednesday, March 27, at 2 p.m. in the Holmes Convocation Center on campus. A reception will follow on the floor of the convocation center at 3:15 p.m.

The lecture series is named for the late Harlan E. Boyles, who served for 24 years as N.C. state treasurer. The lecture and reception are open to the public. For more information, call 828-262-2057.

King has held various key leadership roles during his 40 years with BB&T. He has been the president and CEO of BB&T Corporation and chairman and CEO of Branch Bank since January 2009. King served as the chief operating officer of BB&T Corporation and Branch Banking and Trust Company from June 2004 to December 2008. He also served as president of BB&T Corporation from 1996 to June 2004. King joined BB&T’s Management Development Program in 1972.

Under his leadership, BB&T remained financially stable throughout the recent recession and was among the first institutions to repay Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds.

Since 2008, BB&T has led U.S. banks in total awards for small business and middle market banking by Greenwich Associates.

King serves on the boards of The Clearing House, The Financial Services Roundtable and the Piedmont Triad Partnership. He is a member of the Federal Reserve Federal Advisory Committee.

He is a former vice chairman of the American Bankers Council and has served as chairman of the North Carolina Bankers Association. King has also served as chairman of the Board of N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, chairman of the North Carolina Small Business and Technology Development Center, chairman of the Forsyth County United Way Tocqueville Leadership Society, and chairman of the East Carolina University Board of Visitors.

King earned a bachelor’s degree in business accounting and a master’s of business administration from East Carolina University. He also is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.
