BOONE—The Lila Duo, composed of violist Kathryn Dey and organist David Turner, will perform Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.
Lila is Sanskrit for pastime, sport or play. Since its founding in 2008, the Lila Duo has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. The duo has been praised by critics for their “brilliant synergy” and “fresh spirit.”
Originally from Lake Mills, Wis., Dey is on the faculty of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts, the Eastman Summer Viola Workshop and the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival.
Her teaching has been recognized by the American String Teacher Association, Strings Magazine, Music Teachers National Association, the American Viola Society, the South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education and the South Carolina Music Educators Association.
Dey currently is principal violist of the Greenville (S.C.) Symphony Orchestra in Greenville. She earned degrees in viola performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at the Eastman School of Music.
Turner is the principal organist and music director at Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, S.C., where he is the primary service musician and accompanist for the adult, children and youth choirs.
Turner is the dean of the Greenville, S.C., chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He has presented workshops and sessions throughout the Southeast on service playing and improvisation to organists including The Fellowship of United Methodist Musicians of South Carolina.
He received his Bachelor of Arts in sacred music from Presbyterian College.
