Gospel Choir and Wind Ensemble featured in early December performances

BOONE—The “Tis the Season” holiday concert series features the Appalachian Gospel Choir Dec. 2 and the Appalachian Wind Ensemble Dec. 3. The series showcases student musicians from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music.

The performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Tickets for reserved seats are $5. Proceeds will be used to fund student scholarships. Tickets are available from the Valborg Theatre Box Office or by calling 800-841-2787, 828-262-3063 or 828-262-4046. Tickets will be available at the door for those events not sold out prior to the performance.

The gospel choir is directed by Dr. Keith McCutchen. They will perform a medley by Richard Smallwood, selections from “Gospel Christmas,” arranged by McCutchen, selections from Bishop Leonard Scott’s “Songbook,” “My God is Standing By” by Walker Hawkins and “They That Wait on the Lord” by Fred Hammon.

The wind ensemble is directed by Dr. John S. Ross. They will perform “A Christmas Intrada” by Alfred Reed, “The Sussex Mummer’s Christmas Carol” by Percy Aldridge Grainger, “Desi” by Michael Daugherty, “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson and “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed.

The ensemble also will premiere Dr. William Harbinson’s “Songs of the Holidays.” Harbinson is a member of the Hayes School of Music faculty.

The concert series replaces the traditional holiday scholarship concert typically held in Farthing Auditorium, which is unavailable because of renovations occurring to the facility.
