BOONE—The 10th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition (AMPC) is accepting submissions through 5 p.m. Nov.16. This competition celebrates the unique people, places and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians and it attracts entries from across the United States. Amateur and professional photographers 13 years of age and older are encouraged to submit entries at http://www.appmtnphotocomp.org.
A panel of professional photographers will review all entries and select those that will be displayed in exhibition at Appalachian State University’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts March 1 through Aug. 16, 2013. The judges will also select the final winners that will be showcased during the exhibition.
The Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition is a partnership among Appalachian’s Outdoor Programs, Turchin Center for the Visual Arts and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.
The AMPC awards more than $4,000 in cash and prizes and has grown into one of the region’s most prestigious photography competitions. Last year the competition received more than 1,000 submissions and was viewed by more than 10,000 people at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
The competition features a series of categories.
This year’s Blue Ridge Parkway Category theme, sponsored by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, is “Blue Ridge Parkway – Weather on the Parkway.” Photographers are challenged to capture images of the Blue Ridge Parkway roadway that also incorporate some aspect of weather.
Entries will be judged on creativity, impact, subject matter, center of interest and storytelling. The winning image in this category will receive a $500 cash award, provided by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.
The “Our Ecological Footprint” category highlights AMPC’s commitment to raise awareness of the natural environment. The category is intended to document environmental concerns in the Southern Appalachians. Appalachian Voices and Mast General Store are partnering to present this award. The photographer who best captures the spirit of this category wins a $500 prize package of cash and prizes.
Additional competition categories this year include “Best in Show” with a $1,000 cash prize, the “People’s Choice Award” presented by Footsloggers with a $350 cash award, and the categories of culture, adventure, flora and fauna and landscape.
The AMPC is made possible through the sponsorship of Virtual Blue Ridge, the premier online resource for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Supporters of the AMPC include: Appalachian Voices, Bistro Roca, Footsloggers, Peabody’s, and Stick Boy Bread Company.
To celebrate the 10th Annual AMPC, An Appalachian Summer will use the exhibition as the focal point for a series of photography workshops in July 2013. More information about these workshops will be posted at http://www.appmtnphotocomp.org.
