BOONE—October is a month to “Celebrate You!” at Appalachian State University with a series of events focused on self-esteem, self-acceptance and empowerment.
This is the fourth year the university has sponsored “Celebrate you!,” an Appalachian-originated campaign developed in collaboration with filmmaker Diane Israel. The program and its curriculum are now offered to colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. [more]

BOONE—Stress, anxiety and sleep difficulties are pressing problems facing today’s college students.
Dr. Karen Caldwell, a professor in the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling in Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education, thinks practicing the art of Tai Chi can help students improve their quality of sleep and reduce stress. [more]

Norman is the Rachel Rivers-Coffey Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing for 2012 in Appalachian’s Department of English. He will speak as part of the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series. [more]

Appalachian will test its campus-wide siren warning system Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 11:55 a.m. Tests are normally conducted on the first Wednesday of the month. The tone used for the monthly tests is not the same tone used for an actual emergency. [more]

BOONE—The Looking Glass Gallery at Appalachian State University presents “Pareidolia,” a painting and drawing exhibit by artist Justin Leitner. The exhibition will be on view through Oct. 10 in the gallery in Plemmons Student Union. The exhibit was curated by Dianna Loughlin, curator of the LGG. [more]

BOONE—The BlueCross and BlueShield Institute for Health and Human Services (IHHS),within the College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University,announces the opening of registration for “The Knob.” All proceeds will benefit Girls on the Run of the High Country, a self-esteembuilding program for girls in the 3rd-8th grade.
