Registration is now open for the High Country Half Marathon

BOONE—The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Institute for Health and Human Services (IHHS) at Appalachian State University announces the High Country Half Marathon to be held on Aug. 25 at 7:30 a.m. This is the second race in the High Country Triple Crown series and all proceeds benefit Girls on the Run of the High Country, a self-esteem building program for girls in the 3rd-8th grade. Carey receives 2012 AASLH Leadership in History Award

BOONE—Dr. Tony Carey has received the Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History. Co-recipients of the award are the Historic Chattahoochee Commission (HCC) and the Troup County Historical Society (TCHS). The award is for Carey’s book “Sold Down the River: Slavery in the Lower Chattahoochee River Valley of Alabama and Georgia.”

Appalachian Journal publishes double issue

BOONE—The Fall 2011/Winter 2012 issue of Appalachian Journal is now available to readers of Appalachian regional studies, poetry, history and other topics dealing with the Appalachian region. The latest issue is $20 and available from appjournal.appstate.edu.

Renkert named interim chair of the Department of Social Work

BOONE—Dr. Lauren Renkert has been named interim chair of the Department of Social Work in the College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University. She replaces Dr. Gail Leedy, who was chair of the department from 2010-12.

Novelist Clyde Edgerton to Present Belk Distinguished Lecture July 12

BOONE—Acclaimed Southern novelist Clyde Edgerton will tell humorous stories and perform music associated with his novels Thursday, July 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the Grandfather Mountain Ballroom in Plemmons Student Union at Appalachian State University.

Campus emergency siren system to be tested July 11

BOONE—Appalachian State University will test its AppState Alert siren system Wednesday, July 11, at 11:55 a.m. Tests of the siren system are normally conducted on the first Wednesday of the month, but the July test was moved because of the July 4 holiday.

Johanson has been named interim chair of the Department of Nursing

BOONE—Dr. Linda Johanson has been named interim chair of the Department of Nursing in the College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University. She replaces Dr. Wanda Stutts who chaired the department from 2010-12.

Advisory: Valve testing at Price Lake June 27

The National Park Service will be testing valves at Price Lake Wednesday, June 27, between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Persons should avoid being in Boone Fork Creek from Price Lake Dam to the confluence of the Watauga River and downstream along Hwy. 194/Broadstone Road and Watauga River Road.

Perennial of the Year historical review presented July 14

BOONE—Join Appalachianperennial_t.jpg State University biology greenhouse manager Jerry Meyer in a review of the Perennial Plant Association’s Perennial of the Year winners from 1990-2012.  The class will be held Saturday, July 14, from 9:30-11 a.m. at the biology greenhouse at 333 Dale Street, directly across from the State Farm parking lot.
