BOONE—Newly commissioned second lieutenants from Appalachian State University’s ROTC program were told by commissioning ceremony speaker Lt. Col. Bo Clayton that leadership is something they will earn every day. Clayton, a 1988 graduate of Appalachian, is former deputy commander of the 4th Military Information Support Group (Airborne) and currently a U.S. Army War College National Security Fellow at the University of North Carolina.

BOONE—Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees has approved increases in tuition and fees for 2013-14 academic year. The trustees approved a $230 increase in tuition and academic fees and a $120 increase in general fees, which include educational and technology fees, athletics and student activities fees.
BOONE—Economic activity in Western North Carolina increased by 0.4 points in October, marking the sixth consecutive monthly increase in the index that tracks the level of economic activity in 25 western North Carolina counties. The increase returned the Western North Carolina Economic Index to its pre-recession level.
