BOONE – Appalachian State University leads the nation in the number of alumni who became National Board Certified teachers in 2011, according to information released this month by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Of this year’s 6,266 teachers across the nation who achieved certification through NBPTS, a total of 1,244 are in North Carolina and 130 graduated from Appalachian. [more]

BOONE—Four Appalachian State University graduates will soon join the less than 1 percent of U.S. citizens who volunteer to serve in the military.
Public relations major Jorge R. Maldonado, psychology major Kelli N. Tapia, anthropology major William J. Tynan and sociology major Kailyn A. Zimmer were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during ceremonies held Dec. 16 at Appalachian State University. [more]

BOONE—Nearly 1,300 candidates for graduation convened for their last official academic function Dec. 18 at Appalachian State University’s Holmes Convocation Center.
When Karen Thomas graduated from Appalachian in 1990, the job market was uncertain and the economy was on the verge of recession and there was conflict in the Middle East. But rather than fear the future, she made her dream of living and working in New York a reality, and as Appalachian’s graduation speaker she urged new graduates to follow their dreams as well. [more]

BOONE—Appalachian will test its campus-wide siren warning system Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012 at 11:55 a.m. Tests are normally conducted on the first Wednesday of the month.
