Catherine J. Smith Gallery
presents senior art exhibit Dec. 5-12

BOONE—The BFA Senior Studio Fall 2011 exhibition opens Dec. 5 in Farthing Auditorium’s  Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University. The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 16.

The exhibition features works by nine students including four painters, two sculptors, a ceramicist, a photographer and a student who is presenting masks as part of her collaborative performance piece with Department of Theatre and Dance students. Eight of the students will be displaying their works at Catherine J. Smith Gallery and one student, Jacob Ford, will be showing work at Looking Glass Gallery in Plemmons Student Union on campus.

Artists whose work will be displayed at Catherine Smith Gallery are Stephen Ball, Heather Bodine, Jaclyn Bowie, Elliott Chalmers, Jamie Kale, Allison Jae McDonald, Julia Taylor and Ian Wilson.

For the past year, these students have worked with Ali Raza, an assistant professor in the Department of Art. Raza said, “The Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition at Catherine J. Smith Gallery provides the Department of Art, the Boone community, family and friends an opportunity to view works created to earn this degree and celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating BFA studio students. The works of these young artists address a wide range of their artistic concerns in diverse media and processes.  I am very confident that this show will be an exciting group exhibition and a moment of pride for participating artists and the art department.”

A reception for the artists and the exhibition will be held Dec.16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Catherine J. Smith Gallery. A reception for Ford’s exhibition will be held in Looking Glass Gallery Dec. 16 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
