ACT hosts Third Annual Socially Aware Holiday Fair Dec. 9

Buy gifts from local nonprofits and support the local community this holiday season

ACT_logo_t.jpgBOONE – Looking for local, affordable, one-of-a kind items for your holiday gift list? Join Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT) on Friday, Dec. 9, for the Third Annual Socially Aware Holiday Fair. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the International Hallway of Plemmons Student Union at Appalachian State University.

Parking is available in the 30-minute spaces in the College Street parking deck, or the parking deck located on Rivers Street.

ACT is Appalachian’s clearinghouse for community service, service-learning, and community-based research opportunities within the N.C. High Country area, as well as across the state, nation, and world.

Local non-profit organizations will be on hand selling unique items that benefit their organizations. From holiday CDs, to dog collars to handmade jewelry – find a gift for everyone on your list and learn about local nonprofit efforts while you shop. Vendors include the Watauga Humane Society, Hospitality House, Hunger and Health Coalition, Turtle Island Preserve and Western Youth Network, among others. Only cash or checks will be accepted.

“Buying local is one of the best ways to keep money in our local economy. Giving local is a great way to support our neighbors in need. This holiday fair is the perfect combination of both,” said Shari Galiardi, director of service-learning for ACT.

Appalachian’s Office of Sustainability will provide an alternative gift-wrapping station to help shoppers with their gift wrapping.
