BOONE—Learn about safety on-and off-campus Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sanford Mall at Appalachian State University. Billed as “Safety@appstate,” the event features representatives from campus, town and county agencies who will provide information about fire, food, bike, animal and personal safety, along with other topics. Just look for the tents set up on Sanford Mall. The public is invited to attend.

“Safety@appstate” is organized by the university’s Safety Day Planning Committee.

Participants will have the chance to win prizes donated by area businesses and campus organizations by completing a “Yosef/Bingo” card that will be validated by visiting the different information tents. Prizes include T-shirts, gift basket, rain gauge, food coupons and more. Food samples and water also will be available while supplies last.

In addition, the following special programs or activities will occur in conjunction with the activities on Sanford Mall:

Tuesday, Sept. 6

OASIS Clothesline Project, a display of T-shirts with anti-violence messages, Sanford Mall.

“Why Walk? – A Survivor’s Story”– a film and discussion about two abductions in 1989 that led to establishing the university’s annual Walk for Awareness, Belk Library and Information Commons Room 114, 8 to 9 p.m.

Walk for Awareness, a silent walk through campus beginning at 9 p.m. honoring victims and survivors of violence. The walk begins on Sanford Mall and ends at Duck Pond Field. The keynote speaker is Mountaineer baseball coach Chris Pollard.

A campus-wide test of the university’s emergency siren, voice and text messaging system will be held at 11:55 a.m.

SkyWarn Weather Spotter training will be held from 5-7 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union. In addition, the National Weather Service will hold a community town hall meeting beginning at 7 p.m. in the student union.

“Sex and a Six Pack,” a night of interactive theater where the audience sets the stage, will share valuable information and help the audience make decisions in regard to alcohol, sex and the law. It will be held in I.G. Greer Auditorium, 7 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
