Noted political columnist Jack Betts to speak at Appalachian

BOONE—Jack Betts, recently retired columnist from the Charlotte Observer, will speak at Appalachian State University Tuesday, Aug. 2. His presentation, sponsored by Belk Library and Information Commons, is at 3 p.m. in Room 421 in the library.  An informal reception will follow his talk.

During his newspaper career, Betts covered everything from the tobacco auctions in the 1960s to the destructive hurricanes of the 1970s and 1980s, and every major statewide political campaign in the last four decades.  He was well known for his weekly column on topics related to North Carolina government and politics.

Betts graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1968. He has won awards from the N.C. Press Association and has been inducted into the N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame.
