Peach named interim assistant director of bands at Appalachian

BOONE—Don Peach of Lincolnton has been named interim assistant director of bands for the 2011-12 academic year in Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music.

Peach will direct the Marching Mountaineers, the Symphonic Band, and teach courses in marching band techniques, instrumental methods and materials, and concert band literature.

Peach has had a distinguished teaching career in the public schools, most notably 21 years at Lincolnton High School.  After his retirement Peach continued to contribute to the school band programs serving as an educational representative for Duncan Music Company, Brook Mayes Music Company, and recently at the Music and Arts Center in Charlotte.  He is widely sought as a clinician and adjudicator, both on the marching and concert levels.

Peach is filling the vacancy created when Dr. Scott Tobias left Appalachian to accept a position at the University of Central Florida. Tobias was associate director of Bands and director of the Symphonic Band, the Marching Mountaineers and the Basketball Band.

“We’re very excited to have Don join the Hayes School of Music in this capacity,” said Associate Dean Jay Jackson.  “His background and experiences give him much to offer our program and students.  We know of his work at Lincolnton and have been aware of his continued successes in programs across the state.  It was our desire to identify someone with such a successful record as his and our hope to have such a music educator as Don to continue our traditions, while providing our students and audiences with his ideas, instruction and flair.”
