ALFA benefit concert April 9

BOONE—The Appalachian State University Sociology Club and A.P.P.S. (Appalachian Popular Programming Society) is co-sponsoring a benefit concert for ALFA (Advancing Life. Fighting AIDS) on April 9 at Legends on campus. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door. The event is open to anyone 18 years and older.

Legends’ alcohol policy permits those 21 and older with proper ID to bring a 6-pack limit of beer or wine coolers (72 ounce limit) or a 750 ml. bottle of unfortified wine per person. No liquor is allowed on the premises. For more information about Legends’ policies, visit http://legends.appstate.edu/pagesmith/8.

Four area bands have generously donated their time and talents to raise money for the organization. Ear Candy will kick-off the event with their sweet and sultry a cappella renditions of popular music, followed by the soulful stylings of Alexis Worthington. Corporate Fandango, recent winner of the Battle of the Bands, will showcase their interesting blend of third wave ska, progressive rock and intense afro/celtic grindcore. Bafoodus will close the show with their eclectic mix of creepy funk, straight-up rock and aggressive jazz/pop fusion. All proceeds from the concert benefit ALFA, which will have a contact table at the concert.

ALFA was organized in 1987 as a grassroots effort to provide support services to those affected by HIV/AIDS in the area. In 1989, with the help of a United Way Venture Grant, ALFA was established as a not-for-profit AIDS Service Organization. ALFA has remained a United Way-funded agency and currently has a staff of nine full-time employees that provide case management to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS, prevention education and free HIV testing and counseling in Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Lincoln, Wilkes and Watauga counties.  In Boone, ALFA provides services at the Appalachian District Health Department every second Wednesday of the month.  For more information about ALFA, visit www.alfainfo.org/.
