BOONE—The 13^th annual Polar Plunge at Appalachian State University on Thursday, Feb. 17, raised more than $8,000 for the Watauga County Special Olympics. A total of 200 plungers participated. All of the money raised will support Watauga County athletes. Prizes were awarded to the most extreme costume for male and female jumpers, as well as to the top fund raising group and individual.

BOONE—Mental health services in rural areas are often limited, especially for children and adolescents. Students encounter many barriers to receiving adequate mental health treatment. These include access, transportation, stigma and finances. [more]

BOONE—Clarinetist and composer Eric P. Mandat will present a guest recital March 17 at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.
