Appalachian will host Green Drinks Boone’s next meeting

BOONE – Appalachian State University will host the monthly Green Drinks Boone meeting Feb. 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Solar Decathlon team’s headquarters located at 1100 East King Street in Boone.  The event is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Appalachian’s Solar Decathlon Team will discuss their plans to design and construct their Solar Homestead that will be entered in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon global competition that will take place in September. Appalachian’s team is one of 20 teams that was selected to participate in this event. Team members will describe how their design is inspired by local mountain ideals of self-reliance and ingenuity, and how they have created a net zero-energy home that integrates renewable resources and energy efficiency.

Green Drinks Boone is an informal social networking organization that hosts monthly events for anyone interested in “green” activities in the High Country.  Boone is among 15 cities statewide and 750 cities worldwide that host monthly gatherings of sustainably-minded people who meet to informally discuss green business, green services and green activities. The Boone network organization has been meeting since 2008. Attendees have found jobs, made friends, developed new ideas and closed deals at Green Drinks events. Green Drinks Boone meets on the second Tuesday of the month and invites interested people to join them.

Appalachian State University has been recognized as a national leader in the development of student programs related to renewable energy, energy management and sustainable development.  Representatives from Appalachian’s Office of Sustainability, Energy Center, and Renewable Energy Initiative will also be on hand to give an overview of their initiatives.
