Five men and three women from Appalachian competed in the event Dec. 9-12, 2010, including Ashley James who won the Division I national title in the collegiate women’s race. James was also the 2009 national champion in the organization’s Division II Under 23 category.
This is the first season that Appalachian’s cycling team is competing at the Division I level. Before going to the national competition in Oregon, the team won the Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference’s cyclo-cross championships in November – its first championship as a Division I team. The team moved up a division in 2010 because of the university’s total enrollment.
Cycling is one of 19 club sports at Appalachian. In addition to cyclo-cross, the team competes in road and mountain bike competitions. Learn more about the team at www.appstatecycling.com/index.php.
