Broyhill brothers and Jerri Heltzer receive honorary doctorates from Appalachian

heltzer_honorary_100.jpgBOONE—Three individuals with long-time ties to Appalachian State University were awarded honorary doctorates during commencement ceremonies Dec. 12 in the Holmes Convocation Center on campus.

They are James T. “Jim” Broyhill of Winston-Salem, his brother, Paul H. Broyhill of Lenoir, and Mary Elizabeth “Jerri” Heltzer.

Regional economy grows, but slightly in WNC

BOONE—Western North Carolina’s economy grew only 0.1 percent in October, and while the growth was slight, it marks the third consecutive monthly increase. The activity is measured in the Western North Carolina Economic Index compiled at Appalachian State University. The index tracks the level of economic activity in 25 western North Carolina counties.

Appalachian Cycling Team brings home championship in first Division I season

cyclingteam_t.jpgBOONE – The cycling team at Appalachian State University won the Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference’s cyclocross championships Nov. 13-14, its first championship as a Division 1 team.  Next, the team will compete in the USA Cycling Cyclocross Nationals in Bend, Ore., this weekend. Five men and three women will compete in the event Dec. 9-12., including Ashley James who is current national champion in the Under 23 category.

Appalachian receives nearly $4 million in gifts and commitments

BOONE—Nearly $4 million in gifts and commitments to Appalachian State University was announced during Friday’s meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Comedian Ron White to perform Feb. 27, 2011

RonWhite_t.jpgBOONE – Grammy Award-nominated comedian Ron White will perform in Appalachian State University’s Farthing Auditorium Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at 8 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 11 at purchase.tickets.com and the Farthing Auditorium box office, open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $15 for Appalachian students and $30 for the public. For more information, call the box office at 1-800-ARTS.

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin to speak at Appalachian’s Dec. 12 commencement
