Five Appalachian graduates begin careers as Army officers

ROTCDec_t.jpgThese five Appalachian State University graduates pose for a photo one last time as ROTC cadets in the Department of Military Science and Leadership before being commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. The new officers are Warren L. Hardin, left, Todd E. Melott, Alexander M. Sika, Michael J. Sutton and Gerald A. Thomas.

Hardin, Melott, Sika and Sutton are all members of the U.S. Army National Guard. Hardin earned a B.S.B.A. degree in management. Melott earned a B.S. degree in graphic arts and imaging technology. Sika earned a B.S. degree in building sciences. Sutton earned a B.S. degree in exercise science. Thomas earned a B.A. degree in psychology and will join the U.S. Army’s Quartermaster Corps.

All the new officers will attend the Army’s Officer Basic Course.

The commissioning ceremony was held Dec. 11 on campus. Graduation ceremonies were held Dec. 12.
