Lectures on intellectual property presented Oct. 7 and 8 at Appalachian

harvendeshield_t.jpgBOONE—Dr. Harven DeShield will present a series of lectures regarding intellectual property Oct. 7 and 8 at Appalachian State University. The presentations are open to faculty, staff, and students as well as the general public.

DeShield will present the following:

An Examination of Relevant Intellectual Property Issues with the Classroom

Oct. 7, 10:30 a.m. – noon, Blue Ridge Ballroom, Plemmons Student Union

The presentation is organized by the College of Fine and Applied Arts.

How to Protect Your Idea

Oct. 8, 9 – 10 a.m., Raley Hall

Registration is required at www.business.appstate.edu/summit. Registrants for the talk will be informed by e-mail as to the location of this presentation, which is part of the 9th Annual Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneurship Summit.

An Examination of Relevant Intellectual Property Issues within Chemical and Material Sciences, Life Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Oct. 8, 2 – 3 p.m., CAP Room 407 (Chemistry, Astronomy and Physics building on Rivers Street)

A reception will follow in CAP Room 401 from 3-3:30 p.m.

The presentation is organized by the Department of Chemistry.

DeShield graduated from Appalachian in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in chemistry. After post-baccalaureate coursework at Appalachian, he earned a Master of Science degree in biological sciences, a Ph.D. in biochemistry and a Juris Doctorate, with a concentration in intellectual property, all from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

DeShield’s practice in intellectual property law includes assisting clients with applying for and protecting U.S. and foreign patents relating to life and chemical sciences, pharmaceutical, genetics, biochemistry, alternate and renewable fuels and technology and material sciences at Armstrong Teasdale LLP, a general practice law firm located in St. Louis, Mo.
