Lecture on Climate Policy: Pre- and Post- Copenhagen presented March 17
Climate policy expert Jason Shogren will give a public lecture Wednesday, March 17, at 5 p.m. in Room 114 Belk Library and Information Commons at Appalachian State University.
The lecture, “Climate Policy: Pre- and Post- Copenhagen,” is being organized by the Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis and the Research Institute for Environment, Energy and Economics at Appalachian.
Shogren’s lecture is the first of what will be a continuing lecture series that will feature leading experts in the area of environmental and energy policy. The lecture series is supported by the Appalachian Energy Center, in collaboration with various departments on campus.
“The lectures will provide a great opportunity to the campus and community to hear from people with exceptional knowledge of the issues, but also experiences in the design and implementation of policy. The hope is the lectures will spur further interest and engagement long after the person leaves campus,” said Dr. Todd Cherry, director of the Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis.
Shogren is the Stroock Professor of Natural Resource Conservation and Management at the University of Wyoming and a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
He was a senior environmental policy advisor in the Clinton White House, and is a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences. Shogren is the current editor of the journal Resource and Energy Economics and author of hundreds of articles and numerous books, including “Painting the Whitehouse Green,” “Species at Risk,” “The Benefits and Costs of the Kyoto Protocol” and “Integrating Economic and Ecological Indicators: Practical Methods for Environmental Policy Analysis.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee named members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), along with former Vice President Al Gore, as recipients of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
As a member of the IPCC, and one of the lead authors of the panel’s third assessment report in 2001, Shogren is among an elite group of scientists who shared the award with Gore.
Shogren’s contributions included work on a chapter that analyzed the cost and benefits of climate control.
