Energy Center awards student research grants

BOONE—The Appalachian State University Energy Center has awarded more than $5,000 in research grants to 12 students through the center’s student research grant program. This is the first year the grants have been awarded.

BOONE—Commencement ceremonies will be held May 8 and 9 at Appalachian State University.

Appalachian Young People’s Theatre Performs “Nightingale” April 9-11

AYPTlogofull.jpgBOONE – Appalachian Young People’s Theatre presents “Nightingale,” an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale.  Performances run April 9-11 in I.G. Greer Studio Theatre on the Appalachian State University campus.  Friday’s performance begins at 7 p.m.  The matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday begin at 2 p.m.

Annual Juried Student Exhibition on display at Appalachian

BOONE – Art Expo 2010, an annual juried student exhibition, is on display through April 14 at Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University. The gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Percussion performance April 8 explores “musical noise”

BOONE—Appalachian Percussion Ensemble explores the world of percussion from musical noise to jazz during an April 8 performance at Appalachian State University.

Delta Kappa Gamma Society International scholarship opportunity

BOONE—Applications are being accepted for two scholarships to be awarded by Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. A scholarship will be awarded to a student from Appalachian State University and from Lees-McRae College. The application deadline is May 1.

Lecture by Victor Stenger March 31

BOONE—Victor J. Stenger, New York Times bestselling author of “God: The Failed Hypothesis, How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist,” will present a free and open-to-the-public lecture, “Is There Evidence for Life After Death?,” March 31 from 5:30-7 p.m. in I.G. Greer Auditorium at Appalachian State University.

Woodwind ensembles featured in April 1 performance

BOONE—Woodwind ensembles from the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University will perform April 1 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Inaugural Juanita Tobin Memorial Reading features poet Shelby Stephenson

shelby_t.jpgBOONE—The inaugural Juanita Tobin Memorial Reading will take place on Thursday, April 1, when poet Shelby Stephenson is featured in Appalachian State University’s Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series. Stephenson will read from his works beginning at 7:30 p.m., in Plemmons Student Union Table Rock Room. He also will present the craft talk “The Craft and the Poem” at 2 p.m. also in Table Rock Room.
