Cycling Team competes for second “Triple Crown”

MountainChamp_t.jpgBOONE – Appalachian State University’s cycling team has begun its quest for capturing a second straight Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference’s Division II “Triple Crown” after winning the conference Mountain Bike Championship. The “Triple Crown” consists of three different racing seasons: mountain, cyclocross and road racing.

With the 2008 Mountain Bike Conference Championship, the Mountaineers have now claimed the championship for three consecutive seasons.

Appalachian will compete in the 2008 Collegiate National Mountain Bike Championships in Banner Elk Oct. 24-26. Lees-McRae College will host the championship weekend with racing events taking place on its campus and the Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. Appalachian has eight men and four women competing.

Appalachian heads into the championship weekend with a strong possibility of claiming individual national championships as well. Riders looking to place on the final podium include senior Alex Hannah, second-year graduate student Rebecca Tomaszewski and junior Mike Thomas. Hannah finished the regular season with a strong effort, taking home the individual conference champion’s honors in the men’s “A” category.
