LAURINBURG—The critically acclaimed book “The High Heart” by Appalachian State University professor Joseph Bathanti has been selected for the summer reading assignment for incoming freshmen at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
Bathanti will appear in Laurinburg in September and meet with area residents and students at St. Andrews as part of the college’s community Reading Program. [more]

BOONE—Some 300 university students representing more than 35 countries participated in the Iberoamerican Leadership Congress held in Barcelona, Spain. Only four students from the United States attended the conference, three of whom were from Appalachian State University. [more]

BOONE—Work has begun to restore and enhance a 150-foot section of Boone Creek that runs between Howard and Rivers streets in Boone. The affected portion of the creek runs from near the back of Café Portofino to the future location of the university’s Beasley Broadcasting Complex at the corner of Depot Street. [more]

BOONE—Larry V. Ellis has been named interim chairman of the Walker College of Business’s Department of Economics at Appalachian State University effective July 1.
He replaces George Schieren, who is retiring after 31 years at the university. [more]
