Professor’s short story collection selected for St. Andrews Presbyterian College summer reading program

highheart300_t.jpgLAURINBURG—The critically acclaimed book “The High Heart” by Appalachian State University professor Joseph Bathanti has been selected for the summer reading assignment for incoming freshmen at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Bathanti will appear in Laurinburg in September and meet with area residents and students at St. Andrews as part of the college’s community Reading Program.

Appalachian students participate in global AIESEC conference

COBStudents_t.jpgBOONE—Some 300 university students representing more than 35 countries participated in the Iberoamerican Leadership Congress held in Barcelona, Spain. Only four students from the United States attended the conference, three of whom were from Appalachian State University.

Boone Creek restoration project begins

streamrestoration_t.jpgBOONE—Work has begun to restore and enhance a 150-foot section of Boone Creek that runs between Howard and Rivers streets in Boone. The affected portion of the creek runs from near the back of Café Portofino to the future location of the university’s Beasley Broadcasting Complex at the corner of Depot Street.

Noted writer and Appalachian professor died May 2

BOONE—John Foster West joined the faculty at Appalachian State University in 1968 to establish the university’s creative writing program.

Appalachian holds Memorial Day ceremony May 26

memorialday_t.jpgBOONE—Appalachian State University will hold a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 26, at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial on the west side of the Dougherty Administration Building.

Ellis named interim chair of Department of Economics

Larry_Ellis_t.jpgBOONE—Larry V. Ellis has been named interim chairman of the Walker College of Business’s Department of Economics at Appalachian State University effective July 1.

He replaces George Schieren, who is retiring after 31 years at the university.

Graphic design major wins ‘best of show’

BOONE – Attabel Artiga, a senior graphic design major at Appalachian State University, won Best of Show at the 2008 AIGA Charlotte Portfolio Review on May 3.
