Appalachian’s Division of Continuing Education takes on new role

BOONE—The Division of Continuing Education at Appalachian State University has been reorganized as the Division of Educational Outreach and Summer Programs, according to Stan Aeschleman, executive vice chancellor and provost.

Tom Fisher, who has served as interim director of continuing education at Appalachian since April 2007, has been named executive director of the newly reorganized division effective immediately.

“This restructuring better defines the overall outreach and service goals of the university and will enable the university to better focus its resources towards serving the needs of a variety of populations through high-quality outreach and summer program offerings in Boone and in the region,” Aeschleman said.

Offices within the division are Office of Conferences and Institutes, directed by Jan Johnson, Office of Extension and Distance Education, which will be directed by Cynthia Weaver, and the Office of Summer Sessions and Professional Development, formerly part of the Office of Academic Affairs. The office will be directed by Lynette Orbovich.

“The Office of Summer Sessions and Professional Development is the most recent addition to the division. It will expand the offerings of the university’s professional development programs to serve the not-for- degree-credit workforce needs in Appalachian’s traditional service region,” Fisher said. “These three offices will provide the access through which Appalachian’s services can be offered to an increasing number of audiences in Boone and the western North Carolina region.”

Fisher came to Appalachian in 1976. He served as director of the Office of Extension and Distance Education from 1996-2007. He was assistant director for operations in the Division of Continuing Education from 1976-1996.

Johnson joined the Office of Conferences and Institutes in 1997. She was named its director in 2006. She previously worked with UNC-Wilmington’s Center for Marine Science Research and was program director of UNCW’s Division of Public Service and Extended Education.

Weaver has worked at Appalachian since 1979, serving as associate director of admissions prior to joining the Office of Extension and Distance Education as associate director. She had served as interim director since April 2007.

Orbovich has worked at Appalachian since 2000. She worked in career counseling and workforce development for 25 years in West Virginia before joining Appalachian as assistant director of Appalachian’s Career Development Center.
