Workshop series at Appalachian focuses on alternative energy sources

BOONE—The Western North Carolina Renewable Energy Initiative at Appalachian State University has organized a series of workshops that will focus on alternative energy sources.

The workshops will meet in Harper Hall on campus unless otherwise noted. They will be conducted by experts in the alternative energy field.

April 19-20 Small Scale Wind Energy
Steve Loritz from Southwest Windpower (SWWP) will teach the basics of residential wind systems at Appalachian’s wind research facility on Beech Mountain. The workshop also will serve as dealer training for SWWP. Cost is $300 for non students and $95 for students. The workshop is limited to 40 participants.

May 22-23 Photovoltaics
A representative from Sharp Solar will lead participants through a typical roof-top solar installation from specification to completion. Cost is $190 for nonstudents and $95 for students. The workshop is limited to 15 participants.

June 20-21 Community-Scale Biodiesel Production
Learn about biodiesel production during this workshop focusing on sustainable community-scale biodiesel production. The workshop will meet at the campus’s biodiesel research facility off State Farm Road in Boone. Cost is $125 for nonstudents and $70 for students. The workshop is limited to 12 participants.

July 11-12 Domestic Solar Water Heating
Participants will learn how to design and construct solar water heating systems for domestic hot water needs. Cost is $190 for nonstudents and $95 for students.

Aug. 27 Photovoltaics and the National Electrical Code
Participants will learn how to install a code-compliant PV system and will receive information on the latest installation techniques being used by the top installers and systems integrators throughout the country. Cost is $90 for nonstudents and $50 for students. The workshop will be taught at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center on campus.

Oct. 4-5 Micro Hydro
Participants will learn about site assessment techniques, including the measurement of head and flow; system design; types of turbines and their associated performance and cost. They also will visit two local microhydro installations. Cost is $190 for nonstudents and $95 for students. The workshop is limited to 20 participants.

Oct. 18-19 Small Scale Wind Energy
