Deadline for soccer tournament registration extended
BOONE—The 2nd Annual People of the Planet Soccer Tournament at Appalachian State University on Sunday, April 6, will celebrate campus and community cultural diversity.
Adult teams will be comprised of faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members representing more than 30 foreign countries. The U8 (ages 6, 7,
and U10 (ages 9, 10, 11) boys and girls teams are comprised of players from the Watauga Parks and Recreation and High Country Soccer teams. The deadline for registering has been extended to April 3.
The tournament will be held at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The event begins with player introductions at 8:45 a.m., followed by the first match at 9 a.m. A second adult match will be played at 10:25 a.m.
The afternoon adult matches will be played at 2 and 3:45 p.m. Children’s games begin at noon.
The event is part of the annual Diversity Celebration held on campus. Admission is free.
Elementary school students in grades 1-5 are invited to register to play on one of the U8 or U10 teams, and to carry small flags of the representing countries and walk with the players to the field before each game.
The school students participating in the opening ceremonies will receive gifts, including a “passport” that they can have signed by players from the various countries.
The tournament Web page, http://www.cs.appstate.edu/soccer/, lists the countries that will be represented in the tournament and provides information about those countries. The site also has a link for parents wishing to register their children for the event. The site also can be used as a resource for teachers.
