“Cows Don’t Fly and Other Known Facts” presented March 28-30
BOONE – The Department of Theatre and Dance and Appalachian Young People’s Theatre will present “Cows Don’t Fly and Other Known Facts” March 28 at 7 p.m. and March 29 and 30 at 2 p.m. in I.G. Greer Studio Theatre at Appalachian State University.
Adapted for the stage by Larry and Vivian Snipes, the play is suitable for all ages but best viewed with children. All tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Valborg Theatre Box Office or by calling 262-3063.
This audience-participation play is based on Paul Brett Johnson’s popular children’s books “The Cow Who Wouldn’t Come Down,” “The Pig Who Ran a Red Light” and “The Goose Who Went Off in a Huff.”
“Cows Don’t Fly” captures Johnson’s vision of a world where extraordinary things happen on a regular basis. Miss Rosemary leads a pretty ordinary life on her farm – that is, until Gertrude the cow begins to fly and simply refuses to come down. George the pig gets a ticket driving a truck into town. Meanwhile, Magnolia the goose disappears, prompting a wide search. She eventually returns home, but is accompanied by a baby circus elephant.
Faculty member Teresa Lee directs the production. The all-student cast includes Alli Senger, Kyle Norman, Lacey Jane Mauney, Brian Chavez, Sarah Burns and Tom Brigham. Hannah Roten is costume designer, Jordan Flemming is tour manager and Ellis Lindsay is stage manager.
Since 1972, the Appalachian Young People’s Theatre has been committed to bringing high-quality, low-cost live theatre experiences to young audiences in North Carolina and the surrounding region. A.Y.P.T.’s productions are seen by up to 6,500 young people each spring semester. The company consists of dedicated undergraduate students from the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian. The program is directed by Associate Professor Teresa Lee.
