Build green, board of trustees chairman says
BOONE—Jim Deal, chairman of Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees says the university should strive to build energy efficient and environmentally friendly buildings in the future.
“I think it’s important for us as a board of trustees to take the position that in all future construction, we do the most we can to have these buildings meet LEED certification requirements,” Deal said during the board’s Dec. 7 meeting.
Appalachian conserves water despite robust water system
BOONE—Appalachian State University has implemented water-saving measures because of the state’s drought, even though its water system remains robust.
Greg Lovins, interim vice chancellor for business affairs, said the university no longer washes state vehicles, has stopped watering athletics fields, and has stopped or reduced watering plants. Low-flow shower heads and toilets have been installed in residence halls as the halls have been renovated. Physical plant employees also lowered the flush rates where possible in the restrooms in academic buildings.
Appalachian’s Board of Trustees to seek $65 million in bonds to finance campus construction projects
Hayes School of Music holiday concert airs Dec. 19 on UNC TV
BOONE—A holiday concert performed by students in Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will be broadcast Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. on UNC TV.
The program, “Holiday Sounds from Appalachian,” was videotaped the week of Nov. 26 in Farthing Auditorium on campus. The broadcast is made possible by the Hayes Endowment for Musical Excellence established by the late Mariam Cannon Hayes, and the Office of Academic Affairs at Appalachian.
Historian Karl Campbell featured on C-SPAN2’s Book TV
BOONE–Karl Campbell, an associate professor in the Department of History at Appalachian State University, will be featured during the Dec. 8 “Book TV” program on C-SPAN2, which airs at 7 p.m.
Campbell, the author of “Senator Sam Ervin, Last of the Founding Fathers,” was taped at an event hosted by Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh. Campbell discusses the life and political views of the man who chaired the Senate Watergate hearings in 1973.
