Appalachian student and Charlotte resident receive awards from Association of Fundraising Professionals

AFPLynnandRobert_t.jpgBOONE—Two volunteers with The Crossnore School received awards from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) at an annual National Philanthropy Day celebration held in Hickory Nov. 14.

Appalachian State University senior Robert Quick and Lynn Mozer of Charlotte received awards for their service to the children of The Crossnore School.

Gospel Choir performs Dec. 2

BOONE—The Appalachian State University Gospel Choir will perform Sunday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium on campus.

Appalachian hosts first Wayne County Weekend

WayneCOStudents_t.jpgBOONE—High school students from Wayne County who each have received a scholarship to attend Appalachian State University recently participated in the university’s first Wayne County weekend.

Lawrence Richardson, Savalius Swain and Sierra Howell each have received a $20,000 Freshman Class Scholarship for Wayne County.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction to deliver Appalachian’s commencement address

Atkinson_t.jpgBOONE— N.C. State Superintendent of Public Instruction June St. Clair Atkinson will be guest speaker at the Dec. 16 commencement at Appalachian State University.

More than 800 undergraduate students and 240 graduate students have applied for graduation.

Appalachian’s Brass Ensembles perform Nov. 26

BOONE—A concert featuring students in various brass ensembles at Appalachian State University will be held Nov. 26 in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Appalachian announces 2008 Summer Reading program selection

theglasscastle_t.jpgBOONE—”The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls has been selected for the 2008 Summer Reading Program at Appalachian State University, announced Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock.

In her memoir, Walls weaves an almost unbelievable account of her mother and father’s unorthodox approach to parenting, the family’s unconditional love for one another, and Walls’s and her siblings’ ability to prosper in spite of the obstacles, including homelessness and alcoholism, they faced growing up.

Hayes School of Music Holiday Concert Held Nov. 30

Carolers_t.jpgBOONE—The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University will usher in the holiday season Nov. 30 with its annual holiday scholarship concert.

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Admission is $5. Tickets are available from the Farthing Auditorium Box Office weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Graham and Smith appointed to new positions at Appalachian

GEOFF_t.jpgGERRY_t.jpgBOONE—Geoff Graham of Boone has been named director of development for Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. Geraldine “Gerry” Smith of Boone and Charlotte has been named an advancement specialist for the college.

Appalachian Guitar Ensemble performs Nov. 27

BOONE—A variety of classical and contemporary compositions for guitar will be performed

Nov. 27 by the Appalachian Guitar Ensemble. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
