Mast General Store’s John and Faye Cooper featured on “Appalachian Perspective” TV program
BOONE – John and Faye Cooper took a leap of faith when they left Florida and moved to Valle Crucis in order to purchase a 100-year-old store that had been closed for several years. They reopened Mast General Store in 1980 and have since created a thriving business – with seven locations in three states.
Appalachian Appreciation Week celebrated Sept. 24-28
BOONE—The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Appalachian State University Appreciation Week Sept. 24-28. As part of the activities, the chamber will host an ice cream social on Monday, Sept. 24, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Sanford Mall. Chamber members will serve ice cream to staff, faculty and students while supplies last.
Recital showcases talents of American composer Alec Wilder
BOONE—The music of American composer Alec Wilder is featured Oct. 2 during a Faculty Recital Series presentation at Appalachian State University.
Members of the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music will perform a variety of vocal and instrumental compositions in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Wilder’s birth.
The recital begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.
Peace Corps service opportunities available
BOONE—Students at Appalachian State University interested in opportunities with the Peace Corps are invited to visit an informational booth Sept. 25 from 1-4 p.m. during Jobfest at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. Also on Sept. 25, Appalachian students and the community are invited to come by Room 421 in Belk Library for a Peace Corps information session from 6-7 p.m.
