Appalachian in Consumers Digest magazine’s Top 50 Best Values list

BOONE—Appalachian State University has once again been included in Consumers Digest magazine’s listing of the top 50 best values for public colleges and universities. The listing appears in the May/June issue of the magazine.

In the article “2007 College Road Map—Making the Right Choices,” the magazine ranks Appalachian 21st based on cost, quality of education offered, academic excellence of freshman enrollment, student-faculty ratio, graduation rates and the number of faculty members holding a Ph.D. or highest terminal degree in their field. These factors were weighed against out-of-state tuition.

Other N.C. universities included in the top 50 list are UNC Asheville (30th), UNC Wilmington (31st) and UNC Greensboro (44th).

“By any measure, Appalachian State University is a top value for its students,” said Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock. “Our campus is known for its attention to teaching, mentoring and advising students throughout their academic career. This recognition is indeed a tribute to the dedication and hard work of the faculty members, staff and administrators who work tirelessly to serve the more than 15,000 students attending Appalachian.”

The magazine says cost alone should not be the sole factor when selecting an academic institution. Students and their parents should visit the various campuses their child is interested in attending, and consider whether an institution is a “best match or best fit” for their student.
