Hammett-McGarry named director of general education at Appalachian
BOONE—Carter Hammett-McGarry of Boone has been named director of general education at Appalachian State University effective July 1.
Hammett-McGarry has been interim director of Freshman Learning Communities at Appalachian since August 2006 and was director of the academic advising center in the Office of General Studies from 1994-2005. She also was dean for students and director of the career development program at the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, S.C., from 2005 to May 2006.

Walking program for cancer survivors begins this week
BOONE – Cancer survivors and their families and friends are invited to participate in “Walk with Us,” sponsored by the Be Active-Appalachian Partnership with support from the Cancer Resource Alliance of the Seby Jones Regional Cancer Center, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System and Relay for Life of Watauga County.

(Raleigh, NC) – A new report released Wednesday finds that North Carolina’s coastline will continue to experience significant loss in land area, property and recreational value in the next 30 to 75 years due to projected changes in climate, leading North Carolina researchers announced.
