BOONE – The Appalachian Family mourns the tragedy at Virginia Tech. Students, faculty and staff have expressed their grief this week in many ways:
Orange ribbons were worn as a sign of solidarity between the two universities. Condolences were signed at a memorial table in Plemmons Student Union that will be sent to the Virginia Tech community. (See their written comments)

SGA President Forrest Gilliam urged his fellow students to carry light and love in order to heal. “Mental illness is no excuse for what happened, but it proves to us that everything should be taken seriously… Let’s work together so that every student feels a part of what we feel tonight as the Appalachian Family,” he said.
Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock re-affirmed the administration’s commitment to campus safety, including reviewing workplace safety policies. He also asked for students’ help in improving campus safety, such as identifying any areas with insufficient lighting, suggesting ways the administration can remain in contact with them in a time of emergency, and reporting any strange behavior by troubled peers.
Words of condolence from the Appalachian Family:
“Our hearts cry out to yours for peace, calm and healing. You are in our thoughts, you are surrounded by love.”
“May every one of you be restored to a feeling of safety. God bless you, VTech.”
“Stay strong, App State has your back, you are in our thoughts and prayers.”
“Know that everyone is pulling for your school to get through this. Show the world what being a Hokie is all about and stay strong!”
“In your honor we will remember and never forget you all.”
“Pain felt by so many of us, so removed, is deep, your pain must be unbearable. Support each other and keep hope in the world.”
“My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to the families of students. Have no regrets. Help each other through this difficult time. Know that the ASU family is here to help you. God bless.”
“Hokies – I’ve been thinking about you guys nonstop. I know what an amazing school and atmosphere you guys have firsthand. Stay strong and keep your faith.”
“I pray you all have the strength to face the days ahead. My thoughts and prayers are with you.”
“God bless every single one of you. I am so inspired by your school’s unity and strength.”
